SARAWAK ENERGY INTRODUCES NET ENERGY METERING SUBSIDY FOR DOMESTIC CUSTOMERS

In support of Sarawak’s renewable energy agenda, Sarawak Energy is introducing a subsidy scheme under the Net Energy Metering (NEM) programme. The initiative aims to make rooftop solar installations more accessible to Domestic Tariff customers by reducing upfront costs, enabling long-term energy savings and contributing to environmental sustainability.

The NEM scheme allows domestic customers with Solar Photovoltaic (PV) systems to generate electricity and export to the grid. The exported electricity is credited to their bills, lowering monthly costs while allowing the community to play a part in Sarawak’s renewable energy journey and reducing Malaysia’s carbon footprint. It also supports the Sarawak Government’s Energy Transition Policy (SET-P), which targets greater renewable energy adoption and decarbonisation to drive sustainable growth.

The subsidy is available to Domestic Tariff customers on a first-come, first-served basis, subject to quota availability. The amount varies according to installation size: RM12,000 for systems above 6 to 50kWac, RM10,000 for systems above 3.5 to 6kWac and RM8,000 for systems ranging from 2 to 3.5kWac.

To ensure safety and quality, all NEM installations must be carried out by installers holding Solar PV Designer certification from the Electrical Inspectorate Unit (EIU) under the Ministry of Utility and Telecommunication Sarawak, with applications submitted to Sarawak Energy’s customer service counter, on behalf of customers.

The subsidy applies only to successful NEM installations from 2026 under the Domestic Tariff category for landed residential properties. The subsidy is limited to one installation per account owner and excludes households with pre-installed solar PV systems.

However, customers who sign NEM contracts in 2025 may submit their claims through SESCO for consideration, with the subsidy, if approved, payable from January 2026.

To raise awareness of the NEM programme and the subsidy scheme, Sarawak Energy participated in the Malaysian Photovoltaic and Sustainable Energy Industry Association (MPSEA) Solar Roadshow on 22 September 2025 at the Sheraton Hotel in Kuching. Zinsolar Engineering Sdn Bhd also participated on that day, and members of the public attended the roadshow to learn more and explore how they could take part in the scheme.
